A couple of notes: There is something odd about the way QuickTime reads anamorophic video. Don’t worry if your PAL version plays in 4:3 - As long as you have a pixel-to-pixel archive I am happy…We will mark from the h264 so no need for panic.
I have left one important edit off the PHP - can you please put your < 120word abstract/intro in the php file as well….Its noted in the PHP but not in the instructions.
Ok…The numbers are in. There was some discontent at who we’d left out which was always going to happen. Congrats to Jacki Kim, John Woo, Julia Tan and Chinthaka Senanayake for ripping in some votes even if they weren’t on the list. The other votes did tally to a nice consensus - although there was a nice spread of votes over all sites as well. Sorry to those that missed out. In terms of archiving and access I will be moving the final site to a new URL and leaving the current one where it is.
Drum Roll Please……The Winner………..with……112 Votes…………is……
……..find out after this short break…
Welcome back…and the winner is………………
Sam Jobbins-Wells (The Crowd against the Wall)
And the runners-up with everything from 82 down to 39 Votes are (in no particular order):
Talyssa S (The pin-board)
Jeremy Chan (The big white one with Primary Roll Overs)
Aliza S (The Monroe/Dean Scrapbook/Diary)
Clarissa L (The Blue,Brown and Orange - JohnK Feel)
Karina K ( The Pink Clothes/Power lines)
Those people who sites are going through now have a chance to alter their designs and fix problems.
Some will be asked to do so based on feedback, structural needs, and editorial privilege. Can those chosen please come see me, or email me, with the changes they’d like to make (if any) and I’ll reply with any additions.
If there are things in these sites you really want changed (particularly in Sam’s design) please yell out in the comments below….(hold off on the obvious errors….but style/design points are appreciated)
In terms of having this complete and finalised I will be working on it over the next few weeks and will let you know when we officially launch.
I will also be working on the House of Cards as I am marking so please make sure your room is up and running…..particularly if you had the important notes….
Thanks for your participation this session…Keep Making…
We have whittled away at the many really terrific CSS styles submitted for Assignment 2. We’ve picked the ones we really loved or which had elements we thought we might like in the final site. Remeber that this is about design not technicalities - if there are small problems they can be fixed — SamJ had some trouble with text note indenting on her wonderful rollovers, JillL has a weird scrool bar on a short container but otherwise its great design….so vote on the overall feel not the technicalities.
Here is the form - Download it or get it in class/lecture deliver to me by the 8th of June.
Here is a v.long detailed description of how to hand in your final assignment. Its longer that it needs to be because it adds steps for signing up to YouTube and uploading - something I am sure many of you will know better than I.
Remember no freaking out - no problem is unsolvable…..
The BIG news is that the powers that be have deemed that the Labs will be too crowded for all the courses to hand in week 13. That means you have and Extension
The final assignment is now Due Monday the 15th of June by 17:01pm (exactly).
I will be running through all this in the Lecture. Be there or risk missing important info.
This week in the Lecture we will be finishing up on Distributed Media that we began in week 9 - I will present some of my favourites -but I’d like to SEE what you like to consume online and DISCUSS with you what it says about network media. So this week do a blog post or comment below with your favourite (most consumed) media online so we can watch/look it at in the lecture..
There will also be some more critical information on Ass3……Storytelling not Interviewing….Showing not Telling and Composition…
In tutorial we will not be working on CSS at all. There will be no coding in class. We will be looking at Titles and integrating photoshop and flash with FCP.
Good luck with the code. You’ve done brilliantly from what I’ve seen. On that point I will have limited web access tomorrow night…so get in early with your questions and queries.
Assignment 2 is dues on thursday. We will accept submissions unitl 5pm on thursday but classes will not be used to hand in or work on the CSS assignment. We will be working on including graphics and more complex titles in your final video. Remember that there are classes in the labs on thursday so you won’t have open access to the labs.
Due to a number of requests I have provided a final revision to the final RRR site - the H2 tags on Dynamic.php and Credit.php have been update to Blockquotes for consistency. Update your cn1fnameS.php from the latest version (delete your current one and recopy/rename cn1fnameS.php)
The Local archive has also been updated so please grab the latest version.
I’ll be in the labs 2pm thursday and 1pm friday - more than happy to sit down and work with you to make sure you get through the assignment and understand how to make it all come together.
I quick reminder that I deliver a lot of mission critical information in the Lecture. If you were not there this week you’ll need to find out what happened or you’ll not complete the assignment.
For your attendence to count you must be at lectures (sign the roll) and complete the tutorial ‘House of Cards’ project completely.
Now for Assignment two:
Assignment Two has been Extended - Due to Easter and a sense that more time on this is valuable Assignment two in now due Thursday week 10. The third assignment is due as advertised.
Here is the actual site in its final location you will have to check your updates through this link (not by loading the site in the browser : http://making.media.arts.unsw.edu.au/rrr
Here is the PDF file with the instructions for file preparation and editing.
Here is the ‘etherpad - now mediawiki’ link <a href=”http://newsouthblogs.org/wiki/index.php/Mdcm2002_RRR_List for adding your video page information to the site via PHP. You need to go to this page and add your details to the list before your name will appear in the list of styles. Just hit the ‘edit’ tab at the top of the page. Add or ammend you details and then hit ’save page’. Note that the server will not populate the site with the necessary links until I copy this across…. there will be a delay so get there sooner rather than later. If you have any problems with this let me know and I’ll ensure it happens manually and immediately.
(If your a web guru then just grab the whole rrr site from the server and enable PHP via apache on your localhost webserve folder - if this is dutch to you then just ignore.)
The lecture keynote (no audio) from week 5&6 is being posted soon. (currently exporting). Please note that our lecture hall is NOT lectopia enabled and I can’t find a way that I think is effective (given my mode of delivery) and economic in terms of download, prep-time, and teaching. The lectures are a good place to come together….so please try and be there and if you can’t come see me…
Apparently some people are still confused : You are developing a generic style for the whole site…your style will apply to all pages and all users - so it should reflect the theme - not your individual project.
Due to problems with Firefox in the labs (sigh..) I have coded a page that will allow you to choose your stylesheet (or someone elses) from the list of submissions. This will also save a cookie to your machine that remembers your choice.
Go here : Style Selector - Choose your name form the list and then click the link to the index page. You can also find this link on the index page.
I recommend looking for Will DeWitt in the list of styles - as he has already coded a whole site and you can see how the pages are styled (note that your individual php page won’t be effected until it is updated to the new version).
To make this work there is a new version of the cn1fnameS.php page for your to copy, rename, and replace the one you currently have on the server. You can just ’save link as’ (ctrl click) that link and download the file. Rename it and replace yours on the server.
In this new version I have also updated the “navbar” div to include elements for the more adventurous coders and have added for free user defined divs that exist on every page…. This means you have 4 page specific ‘free’ divs and 4 ’site-wide’ (they appear on all four pages) divs.
